RSBP Visit

Today we had a special visitor - Lindsey from the RSPB.

First we were given a challenge - we had to sort bird pictures into 2 categories - those that would be found in the rainforest and those that would be found in Scotland.

We had to work together and communicate with each other.

Listening to each other was important.

Next we discussed why birds in the rainforest look different to the birds we see in Scotland. Can you remember why?

Why are some rainforest birds rare?

Next Lindsay spoke to us about different birds that you see in Orkney. Lindsey spoke about Song Thrush, Greenfinch and Collared dove. What did each of these birds eat?

Then we made some bird food.

What is in the bird food?

We had to mix it up with our hands. What did it feel like?

At the end of the lesson Lindsey told us we had 3 special jobs:
1. The bird food must be kept in the fridge
2. Only put 1 or 2 pieces of bird food out at a time
3. Put the bird food out in the open

Can you remember why these things are important?

We will be taking part in the RSPB Big Schools' Birdwatch . We will keep you updated on how many birds we see.

Numicon

Today the Primary 2's have been finding 'how many?' by grouping objects.

We realised that the best way is to group objects into tens.

After PE we grouped ourselves to see if we were all ready! We used the Numicon shapes to help us.

Can you write the numeral for this number?

What is one more than this number? What is one less than this number?

The Rainforest

In term 3 our class topic is the rainforest and this week we have been thinking about different climates.

What does climate mean?

How did we research the rainforest climate?

We were also given a challenge. Each group had an envelope and it had a place written in it (either the Amazon Rainforest or Orkney).

We then had to present a weather forecast for that place.

The rest of the class had to guess the place we were describing.

How would you describe the weather in the rainforest?

How would you describe the weather in Orkney?

What is similiar about the weather in a rainforest and Orkney? What is different about the weather in Orkney and the rainforest?

Fruit Smoothies

Last week P2/3 made healthy fruit smoothies.

We created a list of fruits that we could include.

We split into groups and gave ourselves team names and created a recipe for our fruit smoothies.

The next day we made the smoothies. We had to chop the fruit, add it to a blender and add fruit juice and ice.

Finally, we tasted all of the different types of smoothies.

Our recipes are below :)

The Pineapples - banana, apple, melon and apple juice

Super Fruit - cherries, apples, bananas and apple juice

The Oranges - pineapple, strawberries, oranges, apple juice

Tropical Mess - mango, bananas, oranges, apple juice

No added sugar - melon, pineapple, apples, orange juice.

Health and Wellbeing

In term 2 as part of our Health and Wellbeing topic we have been researching a balanced diet by investigating the 5 food groups.  This week we have been learning about foods that are high in fats and sugars.

We considered how much sugar and salt is in different foods.

We looked food and drink labels and found how much sugar / salt was in each item.

Then we weighed out the amount of sugar / salt on a set of scales.

We made sure it said '0' on the scales before we added the sugar so it was fair.

Sometimes we had to use a calculator to check how much sugar was in the food / drink as the label only told us the amount in 100g!

We were shocked to find out how much sugar and salt was in each of these items.

We thought strawberry jam would be healthy because it has fruit in it, but it was the food / drink that had the most amount of sugar!!

After reading the label we learned that it has a lot more sugar than fruit.
